The climb takes between 35 and 90 minutes, and which end of that range you land on depends entirely on you. The trails are volcanic, the ground at the top is petrified lava, and Pacaya is close enough from there to look at properly. Then the pizza. A chef makes it from scratch in front of you and bakes it under volcanic rock, using the heat the mountain provides. One condition is attached, and the operator states it plainly: that only works when the volcano is active. When the heat is not there, the pizza is cooked over charcoal instead. Read this part before booking. The walk can be physically demanding, and the operator does not recommend it for older travellers or for anyone with mobility problems. Pick-up is from your hotel lobby. Comfortable clothes, closed shoes.

  1. Guatemala City

The day starts with a pick-up in the lobby of your hotel. Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes.

  2. Pacaya Volcano

The walk up Pacaya goes along volcanic trails, across old petrified lava fields, with the volcano and everything around it in view along the way. Afterwards, the pizza. It is baked under volcanic rocks, using the heat of the mountain, when the volcano is active enough to supply it. When that heat is not available, the pizza is cooked over charcoal instead, which is worth knowing rather than discovering. Either way the chef makes it from scratch in front of you. The combination is what sells this one: a demanding walk, a place to sit at the top of it, and something cooked properly at the end.

  3. Guatemala City

After the day out, the bus takes you back to your hotel in the city.
