Pacaya stands over 2,438 metres (8,000 feet) and is reckoned the most active volcano in Guatemala, which is the reason for the rule that shapes this trip: you do not go into the crater. That is a safety decision, and it is stated up front rather than discovered on the mountain. What you do instead is climb for two and a half hours from the base, 25 km (15 miles) south-east of Guatemala City, with a guide, on a mild path through volcanic vegetation. There is a viewing spot at the lagoon of Calderas, and from it Agua, Fuego and Acatenango are all visible at once. Higher up, a plateau along the trail looks onto the main crater. From there you see the red-hot lava moving and the steam the heat drives out of the ground. It is a view rather than an approach, and there is time to sit with it before the walk back down.

  1. Pacaya Volcano

A full day out to Pacaya from Guatemala City. The volcano stands over 2,438 metres (8,000 feet) above sea level and is reckoned the most active in Guatemala. After the hotel pick-up the road runs about 25 km (15 miles) south-east to the base of the volcano, where the climb starts: two and a half hours with a guide. The walk is a mild one as far as the viewing spot at the lagoon of Calderas, where Agua, Fuego and Acatenango are all in view. From the plateau further along the trail you can see the main crater. Visiting the crater itself is not possible, for safety, but from here the red-hot lava is visible moving, along with the steam the heat of Pacaya forces out of the ground. There is time to stop and take it in before the walk back down to the base.
