Tokyo: Mt. Fuji Cruise & Hakone Ropeway Day Trip by Bus

Four stops out of Shinjuku, on a bus with premium seats, leaving at 8:00 am sharp. That last word is the operator's: latecomers are not refunded. Owakudani comes first, a volcanic valley still active, where the ground steams and the sulphur reaches you before the view does. The rock, the smoke and the colour of the earth look like nowhere else in Japan. The local speciality is the black eggs, boiled in the geothermal water, and eating one is supposed to add seven years to your life. The ropeway over the valley is optional. Then Lake Ashi, crossed on a sightseeing ship built to look like a pirate ship, with Mt. Fuji at the far end of the water and a shoreline that changes with the season. Hakone Shrine stands on the lake, with the Peace Torii out in the water in front of it and Kuzuryu Shrine alongside, which people visit for love and good relationships. The approach runs between cedars. Lunch is at Moto-Hakone Port, where the guide will point you at the places worth eating in. Wakasagi smelt fried whole, Hakone soba and seasonal set meals are the things to look for. The last stop is the Fuji Peace Park, a hilltop most tourists never reach, with a white stupa and the mountain behind it. The meeting point is in front of the Seven-Eleven at the NTT Nishi-Shinjuku Building, and the guide carries a white Local Guide Stars flag. Be there ten minutes early.

  1. Shinjuku City, Nishishinjuku, 1-chōme−22−14 Ntt西新宿ビル

In front of the Seven-Eleven at the NTT Nishi-Shinjuku Building. The guide will be holding a white Local Guide Stars flag. Arrive at least ten minutes before departure. The bus leaves at 8:00 am sharp, and there is no refund for arriving late.

  2. Hakone Jinja

At Hakone Shrine there is the Peace Torii standing in Lake Ashi, and Kuzuryu Shrine beside it, which people visit for love and for good relationships. The approach runs between cedars, which changes the walk. Afterwards there are cafes nearby and the cruise on Lake Ashi. Nature, history and quiet in the same place.

  3. Lake Ashinoko

After the cruise, lunch at Moto-Hakone Port, on the lakeshore. There is everything here from traditional Japanese cooking to Western dishes and small cafes, and the guide will point you at the local favourites. Eating with Mt. Fuji in front of you is the reason to sit outside. The specialities are fried wakasagi smelt, Hakone soba and seasonal Japanese set meals.

  4. Togendai Station General Information Center

The cruise runs on a sightseeing ship built to look like a pirate ship, which is not what most people expect on a lake this calm. Clear blue water, green mountains, and the snow on Mt. Fuji at the end of it. The view changes completely with the season: cherry blossom along the shore in spring, heavy green in summer, red and gold in autumn, and snow on the peaks reflected in the water in winter.

  5. Owaku-dani Valley

The first stop is Owakudani, a volcanic valley that is still active. Sulphur in the air, white steam coming out of broken ground, rock and smoke in every direction. It does not look like the rest of the country. The thing to eat here is the black eggs, boiled in the geothermal heat, which local lore says add seven years to your life. There is also an optional ropeway ride, which passes directly over the steaming valley.

  6. Fuji Bussharito Heiwa Park

The Fuji Peace Park is known mostly to locals. From the hilltop the view of Mt. Fuji is about as clear as it gets, and there is nobody in the way. The white stupa stands in front of the mountain, and the scene changes through the year: blossom in spring, heavy green in summer, colour in autumn, and hard clear air in winter. If you want a photograph of Fuji that most visitors never take, this is where.

  7. Shinjuku City, Nishishinjuku, 1-chōme−22−14 Ntt西新宿ビル
