The Golden Circle, the crater, and two hours at the Sky Lagoon with the ticket included. Þingvellir is where the plates are pulling apart, and where you can stand with one foot in America and the other in Europe, on either side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Its parliament met here for a thousand years: chieftains making laws, settling disputes, and handing down sentences, some of which ended in the drowning pool. Geysir gave every geyser its name. The Great Geysir has gone quiet, but Strokkur is metres away and goes off every few minutes, and the sulphur in the air makes the point about what is under your feet. Gullfoss takes meltwater off the Langjökull glacier and drops it 30 metres into a ravine, in two steps. The spray reaches the path, and on a sunny day so do the rainbows. Kerið is red because of the iron in its rock, with velvet green moss over the banks and a shallow turquoise lake at the bottom. The Sky Lagoon closes the day, two hours of it: an infinity pool with the ocean in front of it, a seven-step ritual built on Icelandic bathing traditions that alternates hot water, cold water and open air, a bar you swim up to inside a cave, saunas and a café.

  1. Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir National Park is where the continental plates are visibly tearing apart, and where you can stand with one foot in America and the other in Europe, on either side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It matters historically as much as geologically. The first parliament met here for a thousand years, with chieftains gathering to make laws, dispense justice and settle disputes. Some sentences were carried out in the drowning pool.

  2. Geysir

Geysir is the centre of the Haukadalur geothermal area, and the place that gave geysers everywhere their name. The Great Geysir has fallen silent. Strokkur, a few metres away, has not: it erupts every few minutes, sending superheated water high into the air, reliably enough to earn the comparison with Old Faithful. The sulphur in the air is the other half of it.

  3. Gullfoss Falls

A short drive from Geysir to Gullfoss, the gold falls: a two-step waterfall fed by freezing meltwater off the Langjokull glacier, thundering 30 metres down into a deep ravine. The spray carries, so standing close means getting damp. On a sunny day it also means rainbows, more or less constantly.

  4. Kerid Crater

Kerið, on the South Coast, is a volcanic crater a few thousand years old, and the colour is not decoration: it comes from iron deposits in the rock. Green moss covers the banks in thick layers, and a shallow turquoise lake sits at the bottom.

  5. Sky Lagoon

The last stop, two hours at the Sky Lagoon, the newest of Iceland's spas. The main pool is an infinity pool with an uninterrupted view of the ocean. There is a seven-step ritual based on Icelandic bathing traditions, alternating warm water, cold water and fresh air. There is also a bar you swim up to, hidden inside a cave, along with saunas and a café.
