The Golden Circle with the Kerið entrance fee included, and a decision at the end of it. The day finishes in hot water, and you choose which: the Blue Lagoon, with or without the admission ticket included in your booking, or Hvammsvík. Hvammsvík is the one worth reading about before deciding. It sits on the Whale Fjord, and the water in it is geothermal water drawn from 1,400 metres down, mixed with seawater from the Atlantic beside it. The flow is continuous: it runs from pool to pool, spills over the edges, and goes back to the ocean, which is what keeps the water as clean as it is. At the Blue Lagoon, going in is optional. You can also walk the lava fields around it and use the shop or the restaurant instead. Before all that: Þingvellir, on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian plates. Laugarvatn, where the steam is used to bake rye bread in the ground. The Geysir field on foot, past bubbling ponds and steam vents, with Strokkur throwing a column up to 30 metres about every ten minutes. Gullfoss, where the Hvítá is swept into a canyon 70 metres deep. And Kerið, 3,000 years old, with a lake in it and slopes that are genuinely coloured. If the Blue Lagoon is the choice, the drive there crosses the Reykjanes peninsula, past lava fields and cone volcanoes with the Atlantic beyond them.

Itinerary

  1. Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir National Park sits in volcanically active ground, on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian plates meet. You can walk between them, with a continent on either side.

  2. Laugarvatn

Laugarvatn sits by a lake of the same name in geothermally active ground. Locals use the superheated vapour rising here to bake rye bread directly in the earth.

  3. Site de Geysir

The Geysir geothermal field on foot: bubbling ponds, steam vents, and the two geysers, Geysir and Strokkur. Stay long enough and Strokkur goes, roughly every ten minutes, sending a column of water up to 98 feet, 30 metres.

  4. Gullfoss Falls

Gullfoss, the golden waterfall, where the Hvíta, the white river, is swept into a canyon 70 metres deep.

  5. Reykholt

A small town, and a lot of greenhouses.

  6. Kerid Crater

Back on the bus for Kerið, a crater 3,000 years old with a lake filling the bottom of it and slopes that are properly coloured.

  7. Reykjanes Peninsula

The drive across the Reykjanes peninsula, past wide lava fields and cone volcanoes, with the Atlantic in view, before reaching the Blue Lagoon.

  8. Hvammsvik Hot Springs

OPTIONAL. Choosing Hvammsvík sends the bus towards the Whale Fjord, where the spa is. The water there is geothermal water from 1,400 metres below the surface, mixed with seawater from the Atlantic next to it. The flow is continuous: it moves between the pools, spills over their edges, and returns to the ocean, which is what keeps the quality where it is.

    Costo extra

  9. Blue Lagoon

OPTIONAL. At the Blue Lagoon you can go into the spa, if you selected that option when booking, and sit in the steaming water with the lava fields around you. If you would rather not swim, there is a walk around the lava fields, a skin care shop, and a restaurant.
