Mount Fuji Day Trip from Tokyo: Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai and Lake Kawaguchi
Seven stops around the north side of Mount Fuji in one day, with an English-speaking guide. The bus leaves from Shinjuku or from Tokyo Station, and the route stays on the Fujiyoshida and Kawaguchiko side of the mountain, which is where the views people recognise were taken from. The first climb is the hard part: 398 steps up through Arakurayama Sengen Park to the Chureito Pagoda, with Fuji behind it and the town of Fujiyoshida spread out below. Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine stands at the bottom of the same hill and has been there since 705. After that the day follows the water. Lake Kawaguchi has the longest shoreline of the Fuji Five Lakes and, on a still and clear day, holds a mirror image of the mountain. Oishi Park sits on the shore with a 350-metre flower walk running alongside the summit view. At Oshino Hakkai you can drink, for free, from eight spring-fed ponds filled by snowmelt that spent more than 80 years filtering down through lava. The last two stops are street-level Japan rather than scenery: the Hikawa Clock Shop, where the road frames the mountain between the buildings, and the Lawson at Fujikawaguchiko town hall, whose blue shopfront sits under the peak.

Look up "STAND T" on Google Maps. It is inside JR Tokyo Station: take the Marunouchi South Exit on the 1st floor, head towards Otemachi for about 250 metres, then right and ahead. The group gathers on the 1st floor of the Shin-Marunouchi Building, under the BEAMS sign.
Chureito Pagoda
The Chureito Pagoda stands in Arakurayama Sengen Park, above Fujiyoshida. Getting up to it means 398 steps, and from the observation deck the pagoda, the mountain and the town line up in one frame. That composition is why the spot sits on the list of 21 places photographers travel to Japan for, and why the view is rated among the best in the country. Cherry blossom season puts the five-storey pagoda and Fuji behind a screen of pink, and it is the picture most people know. The park holds up in any month, though. What changes is the colour.
Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine
Built in 705, the shrine has looked after Arakura Village for more than 1,300 years. People come to it to ward off bad luck, to keep peace in the household, and to ask for a safe birth and a child raised well.
Lake Kawaguchiko
Lake Kawaguchi is the best known of the Fuji Five Lakes and has the longest shoreline of the five, with the mountain visible straight from the bank. The reason to be there is the reflection: when the air is still and the sky clear, the whole of Fuji appears upside down on the water. In 2013 the lake joined the World Heritage List as part of the Fujisan Cultural Site.
Oishi Park
Oishi Park is the spot that puts flowers, the lake and Mount Fuji in a single view. The planting along the lakeside promenade changes with the season. On the west side the Flowers Road runs 350 metres, and at the end of it the kochia, or summer cypress, comes into its own between summer and autumn, which makes that corner the busiest place for photographs in the park. Ninety types of seasonal flower grow here across the year, so something is always out. The walk is flat, and the mountain stays in front of you the whole way.
Oshino Hakkai
Oshino Hakkai is a village built around eight ponds of clear spring water, listed among the Top 100 Famous Waters of Japan. It is a designated Natural Monument and part of the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site. The water starts as snow on the slopes above. It takes more than 80 years to work its way down through the porous lava under the village, which is what leaves it as clear as it is. The springs matter a great deal to people here, and visitors can taste the water for free: it comes out soft and faintly sweet, and the legend attached to it promises a long life.
Hikawa Clock Shop is located in a charming town
The Hikawa Clock Shop sits in a quiet town well away from Tokyo. The street in front of it runs straight at the mountain, which is why photographers stop: the shopfronts on either side and Fuji closing the far end.
A popular Instagram location showcases the unique beauty of…
This is the convenience store that turned into a photo stop. The blue shopfront reads as very modern against the tallest peak in Japan, and that contrast is the whole reason to pull over. Once the photos are done, the shop sells the usual snacks, drinks and supplies.
