Seven to eight hours around Faial, private, taking in the points of interest of the whole island and the history behind them. The first half follows the south coast from Horta out to the Capelinhos volcano. Lunch is a full picnic in one of the island's recreational parks. The afternoon covers the Caldeira, the lighthouse at Ribeirinha that an earthquake brought down, and one of the best sand beaches in the Azores. The day starts in front of the Casa da Baia tourist information building in Horta.

  1. Praça Infante Dom Henrique, Horta

    The meeting point is in front of the Casa da Baia tourist information building.

  2. Faial Island

    The first half follows the main road along the south coast of Faial out to the Capelinhos volcano. The second half climbs to the Caldeira, goes on to the eastern tip of the island, and comes back to Horta. Between the stops the drives run 15 to 20 minutes.

    The Capelinhos volcano, at the western tip of Faial, is the clearest evidence of active volcanism in the Azores. It erupted between September 1957 and October 1958. Before that, the small port below it was one of the main places for launching whaling boats.
