Faial Half Day from the Horta Ferry: Caldeira, Capelinhos, Sea Pools
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Faial IslandBuilt for people crossing over for the day. The van meets the ferry at Horta, so a few hours between boats is enough for what Faial is known by. The Caldeira is the centre of it, about 2,000 metres across, seven kilometres round the rim and 400 metres deep. The island came out of it. Capelinhos is the other end of the story: grey sand against green hills and blue water, and the reason people call the place lunar. Between the two, Monte da Guia, a volcanic cone with two semicircular craters and a view straight down onto Porto Pim and Horta. Then the Nossa Senhora da Conceição viewpoint, with the old town and the bay on one side and Praia do Almoxarife on the other, Pico across the channel with the highest mountain in Portugal on it, and on a cloudless day São Jorge and Graciosa as well. The road up to the Caldeira runs above Flamengos, the only parish on Faial that touches no sea, shut in by mountains and volcanoes. The last stop is the natural pools at Porto do Comprido, basalt shaped when lava went into the water and set.

Monte Da Guia Walking Trail
Monte da Guia is a volcanic cone with two semicircular craters. From up there the Porto Pim beach and the town of Horta are both below you.
Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao
The Nossa Senhora da Conceição monument, with the old centre of the town and the bay of Horta on one side and Praia do Almoxarife on the other. Pico is across the channel, with Pico Mountain, the highest point in Portugal. On days without cloud, São Jorge and Graciosa are visible too.
Flamengos
The road to the Caldeira do Faial runs above the parish of Flamengos and looks down over all of it. Flamengos is the only parish on the island with no sea anywhere around it, shut in by mountains and volcanoes.
Caldeira
The Caldeira, in the middle of the island, is the true ex-libris of Faial. One of the largest volcanic craters in the Azores and the origin of the island itself: about 2,000 metres across, seven kilometres round and 400 metres deep.
Capelinhos
Capelinhos, one of the best known volcanic sites in the Atlantic and certainly in the Azores. The ground looks lunar, and the grey of the sand runs up against the green of the hills with the sea and the sky behind.
We will visit the Natural Pools of Porto do Comprido
The natural pools at Porto do Comprido, basalt basins formed when incandescent lava ran into the sea and set.
