Faial in Four Hours: the Caldeira Rim and the 1957 Capelinhos

Four hours, one island, and the two things Faial is known for. The Caldeira is 2,000 metres across, its highest point 1,043 metres above sea level, and the road to it climbs through the middle of the island. Capelinhos is at the western end. Its eruption in 1957 and 1958 was the most recent the island has had, and the volcano is the youngest thing on Faial. Between the two, the run takes in the Nossa Senhora da Conceição viewpoint above Horta and the east coast, then Praia da Fajã on the north side, black sand under a green slope, and finally the south coast past the parishes of Capelo, Castelo Branco and Feteira to the last stop at Monte da Guia.
