Fagradalsfjall with a Geologist, an Hour and a Half Each Way
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
ReykjavikFagradalsfjall is the newest volcano in Iceland, and the ground you walk on came out of it in 2021. The guide is a professional geologist or volcanologist, which changes what the rock means on the way up. The walk to the crater viewpoint takes one to one and a half hours each way, over lava fields that did not exist a few years ago. On the way the guide goes through how the composition of the lava decided the shape of everything around you, and what the Reykjanes peninsula was doing before the eruption began. One thing said plainly: glowing lava cannot be promised. What the eruption left is there whatever happens, but what the volcano is doing on the day is nobody's to arrange. The group is small. Pick-up is in Reykjavík at bus stop 8, by Hallgrímskirkja, and the drive back crosses the peninsula past geothermal springs, crater lakes and volcanic mountains.

Fagradalsfjall Volcano
The walk opens with the volcanic history of the Reykjanes peninsula, including the warning signs that came before the recent eruptions and what happened when they started. Crossing lava fields only a few years old, the guide explains how the composition of the lava decided the shape of the rock around you. The climb to the crater viewpoint takes about 1 to 1.5 hours each way, and what it gets you is the whole spread of the lava fields and the volcanic ground behind them. Visible glowing lava cannot be guaranteed, and nobody should book expecting it.
Reykjavik
The drive back to Reykjavík crosses the Reykjanes peninsula, past geothermal hot springs, crater lakes and volcanic mountains. It is the part of the day where the walking stops and the ground keeps changing outside the window.
