Volcano Hike and Grindavík Visit from Reykjavik

Grindavík was a working fishing town, and the recent volcanic activity has changed what it is. This day goes there, and to the volcano responsible. Pick-up is in Reykjavík, and the first stop is the Seltún geothermal area, with steaming vents and mud pools that boil. The hike to the viewpoint near Fagradalsfjall takes 45 minutes, which puts it within reach of people who would not attempt the longer routes. From up there are the lava fields the recent eruptions built, black and still cooling in places, with steam coming out of the fissures. The Reykjanes Peninsula erupted in 2021, in 2022 and in 2023, all near Fagradalsfjall. In Grindavík the protective barriers the residents built are visible, along with tectonic rifts and lava formations. The harbour is still working. Traditional fish and chips, made from the day's catch, is available in town for a fee. The departure point is the BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavík, a short walk from the centre. Be there 15 minutes before departure.

  1. Vatnsmýrarvegur 10, Reykjavík

The BSÍ Bus Terminal is the operator's hub in Reykjavík, a short walk from the city centre, and the main departure point for airport transfers and day tours. Be there at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure.

  2. Fagradalsfjall Volcano

The Reykjanes Peninsula has erupted several times in recent years, in 2021, 2022 and 2023, all near Fagradalsfjall. What those eruptions left is lava fields, some of it still cooling. The walk to the viewing point crosses rough black lava, with steam rising from the fissures. It is one of the few places where geology this recent is safe to stand on.

  3. Grindavik

Grindavík is a fishing town on the Reykjanes Peninsula with a long connection to the sea, and it has held on through the recent volcanic and seismic activity. The harbour still works, and the coastal views are what they always were. Fish and chips made from the day's catch is available in town, for a fee.

  4. Vatnsmýrarvegur 10, Reykjavík
