Gunnuhver

The hike goes to the eruption sites at Fagradalsfjall, and the rest of the day covers the Reykjanes Peninsula around them. In July 2023 a new eruption opened north of Fagradalsfjall. It lasted three weeks and put out a great deal of lava in that time, which is the ground the walk crosses, along with older lava fields under moss. The difficulty is rated moderate. The peninsula stops are worth the drive on their own. The Bridge Between Continents is a 15-metre footbridge over the rift between the Eurasian and the North American plates, and you cross from one to the other on foot. Gunnuhver has mud pots that bubble and steam vents that hiss. The Reykjanesviti lighthouse stands over the Valhnukamol boulder ridge, with cliffs and sea stacks the Atlantic has cut. Kleifarvatn and the Seltun hot springs at Krysuvik complete the circuit. One caveat the operator states, and it is a fair one: if the volcano hike runs long, some of the other stops get dropped. The eruption site is the point of the day, and it gets the time it needs.
