Etna reaches 3,403 metres and is the largest active volcano in Europe. This trek, the one the operator calls the Ring on the Valley, works the ground where that scale becomes legible: lava flows, craters, caves and volcanic desert, one after another. What the mountain does to Sicily is part of the subject. Crops adapted to volcanic soil, legends attached to the summit, and a daily relationship between people and a mountain that has no real equivalent. The walk climbs gradually, through the endemic plants and the woodland of the high-mountain belt, and crosses sandy desert to reach the Valle del Bove, the caldera depression on the eastern side. On a clear day the view from there takes in the active summit craters, the Ionian coast with its cities of Greek origin, Calabria, the Tyrrhenian, and the Strait of Messina. One section is deliberately soft going: fine lava sand you sink into, which is the most direct way to understand how much of it the volcano throws out during a paroxysm. The last stage descends into a lava tube with a caving helmet and torches, where the subject is how lava flows and what the caves have been used for.

  1. SP92, 19, Nicolosi

Head for the internal car park of the Bar and Restaurant Terrazza dell'Etna. If it is too busy, the upper car park in front of the Terrazza dell'Etna sign works too.

  2. After the guide's welcome with a coffee

The guide starts with a coffee and a short briefing, then the group sets off. From the first metres the ground is the lunar Etna: lava flows and the buttonhole craters that give this side its shape, some of them responsible for real destruction in the modern history of the volcano.

  3. Craters Silvestri of Mount Etna

The lunar side of the mountain opens up at once, with its lava flows and its characteristic buttonhole craters, several of which caused damage within living memory.

  4. Mount Etna

The walk gains height gradually, which lets you notice the endemic plants and the native animals, inside the woods of the high-mountain belt and out on the open ground of the most active volcano in Europe.

  5. Valle Del Bove

The route crosses sandy desert, shallow depressions and the clumps of vegetation that manage to hold on in lava desert, until it reaches the Valle del Bove, the largest and most imposing caldera depression on the mountain. From there the view runs a long way: the summit area with its active craters, the Ionian Sea and the coast where cities of Greek origin were founded, Calabria across the water, the Tyrrhenian, and on a clear day the Strait of Messina.

  6. Mount Etna

The guide calls this section the soft challenge. In several passages you sink to the leg in very fine lava sand, which is the most physical way to grasp how much of it the volcano throws out when it goes into paroxysm.

  7. Finally

The last stage descends into a lava flow cave formed during an eruption, entered with a caving helmet and torches. Inside, the subject is how lava moves underground, along with the myths and the historical uses these caves have had.
