A short version of Etna that still covers the mountain properly, leaving from Catania and the towns around it. One practical choice sets this apart at booking: you can travel in the operator's vehicles or take your own car and follow. The meeting place is fixed when you book. The guides are naturalists, and the explanations run to why the ground looks like this rather than only that it does. Questions are expected. The route takes in the Silvestri craters, the caldera of the Valle del Bove, a lava cave entered with helmet and torches provided, and several lava flows along the way, including the one from the 1991-93 eruption, the longest in the recent history of the volcano. It ends at a certified farm in Zafferana Etnea, with a tasting of honey and of wines made from grapes grown on Etna.

What's included

  • Use of helmet, Head Caps, Torches

  1. Craters Silvestri of Mount Etna

The route heads for the nearby Silvestri craters, where the ground is black dune and sheets of solidified lava. The guide gives the volcanological explanation of how all of it got there.

  2. Valle Del Bove

Next the volcanic caldera of the Valle del Bove: a huge arid depression with almost nothing growing in it, which is exactly where its appeal lies.

  3. Mount Etna

Then a lava cave. The guides go in with you, and the equipment needed, helmet and torches, is handed out beforehand.

  4. Colata Lavica 1992

Several lava flows are visible along the road, among them the one left by the 1991-93 eruption, the longest in Etna's recent history.

  5. Oro d'Etna

On the way back down the tour stops at Zafferana Etnea, at a certified farm, for a tasting of honey and of wines made from grapes grown in the vineyards on the volcano.
