Etna by Helicopter, 30 Minutes from Fiumefreddo: Eight Landmarks from Above
Thirty minutes over the volcano, taking off from the private heliport at Fiumefreddo di Sicilia. The flight covers the part of Etna nobody walks: the summit craters seen from above, where the shape of a vent reads as a circle rather than as a slope, and the old lava flows followed along their whole length instead of crossed at one point. The route passes over the Silvestri craters, Linguaglossa, the Valle del Bove, the Monti Sartorius, Zafferana Etnea, Piano Provenzana and Piedimonte Etneo. From the air the relation between them is plain: the towns sit at the foot of the mountain, the craters above them, and the Valle del Bove is open on the eastern side. One condition to check before booking: the maximum weight per passenger is 105 kg. The heliport is attached to the La Terra dei Sogni country hotel, on Via Catania Messina.
