Arenal Oasis Night Walk: 28 Frog Species in a Family-Run Sanctuary
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
La FortunaArenal Oasis is the only wild frog sanctuary in the Arenal Volcano area, and the walk goes through it after dark, which is when the tree frogs and most of the rest of the forest are awake and can actually be found. At least 28 frog species live in the ponds here. The ponds are fed by fresh spring water, and the Rojas Bonilla family plants and maintains the native species of Arenal around them, because the habitat is what holds the frogs. The reserve works as a corridor between the rainforest of the volcano and that of the Rio Burio. The trails past the ponds are flat, and the forest at night is loud. A trained naturalist leads the walk and points out the animals hiding from you, which is most of them. Pick-up is at your hotel at 5:00 pm.

Arenal Volcano National Park
The sanctuary is private and family-run. The Rojas Bonilla family keeps the native plants of Arenal going around a set of spring-fed ponds, and that planting is what makes the habitat work: at least 28 frog species have settled into it. The reserve also links the rainforest of the Arenal Volcano with that of the Rio Burio, which is why animals move through it. Past the ponds the trail carries on, flat, through rainforest that at night is anything but quiet. The guide is a trained naturalist and finds what is hiding. The tour starts at 5:00 pm with a pick-up at your hotel.
