Arenal from Guanacaste: Café Macadamia, Místico and Titoku
Breakfast is at Café Macadamia, beside Lake Arenal, which is where the day starts and where the volcano first comes into view. The lake under that view has a history worth knowing. It is the largest landlocked body of water in Costa Rica, about 85 square kilometres across and some 60 metres deep, and it is three times the size it used to be. A hydroelectric dam enlarged it in 1979, and the towns of Arenal and Tondadora, which stood where the water now sits, were moved to the north-eastern shore. The dam still produces close to 12% of the country's electricity. The walk is in Místico Park: a short route through rainforest, then the hanging bridges, which put you level with the part of the forest you normally crane your neck at. Lunch is Costa Rican, and the afternoon is at the Titoku hot springs, in mineral water, doing nothing in particular. The trip runs from Guanacaste and passes through Liberia, the white city, capital of the province.

Café Macadamia is the best restaurant in Arenal Volcano lake
Café Macadamia is the best restaurant on Lake Arenal. People travel to it from all over Costa Rica and from abroad, for the food and for the view of the lake and the volcano. Breakfast happens here.
Lake Arenal
Lake Arenal lies at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, in the northern highlands of Costa Rica. It is the largest landlocked body of water in the country, covering nearly 85 square kilometres (33 square miles) and reaching about 60 metres (200 feet) deep. In 1979 it was enlarged to three times its original size by the building of a hydroelectric dam. The towns of Arenal and Tondadora stood where the water now is, and were moved to the north-eastern side of the lake. The dam matters to the country: it produces nearly 12% of Costa Rica's electricity.
Arenal Hanging Bridges
A short walk introduces the workings of the rainforest, and the hanging bridges give you a different angle on all of it.
Titoku Hot Springs
After lunch, the hot mineral springs, and time to do nothing.
