Whale Watching off Lajes do Pico, with a Vigia Ashore
Around 27 species of cetacean can be seen in the waters around the Azores, out in the middle of the North Atlantic, and that is most of the reason people come here to look for them. The boat works with a vigia, the lookout posted on land who watches the sea and tells the skipper where to go. On board there are biologists as well as crew, so what you are looking at gets named and explained while you are still looking at it. If no cetaceans are sighted, the trip is refunded in full. The meeting point is the operator's own shop, the Whale Watching Center, at the entrance to Lajes do Pico harbour, half an hour before departure.
