West São Miguel: a Whaling Lookout, 947 Metres Over Lagoa do Fogo, Lunch Included

A full day across the west of São Miguel, with lunch in the middle of it. The morning is Sete Cidades. The road over Pico do Carvão shows both coasts of the island at once, then the day works its way into the caldera: Lagoa do Canário for a short walk, Vista do Rei over the blue and the green lakes, the Santiago viewpoint, and then down to the shores of the lagoons themselves. There is free time in the village of Sete Cidades for the garden, the church, a shop and a coffee. Ponta do Escalvado is the westernmost point of the island and was once a whaling lookout, which is what people used these cliffs for before anyone came to photograph them. Lunch is Azorean and included: starters, a main course, dessert, drinks and coffee or tea, with vegetarian meals available. The afternoon climbs Pico da Barrosa to 947 metres, above Lagoa do Fogo, with the north and south shores both in view. Salto do Cabrito drops about 40 metres over rock covered in moss and ferns, in air that stays damp.
