Wai-O-Tapu, the Redwoods and the Spring Behind New Zealand's Bottled Water
Three stops that have nothing to do with each other, which is the point of the day. Wai-O-Tapu is the geothermal one. The mud pool boils in a crater left by an eruption, the Champagne Pool holds its colour, and fumaroles steam along the trails. At 10.15 the Lady Knox Geyser goes up 10 to 20 metres and keeps going for about an hour. Park staff start it with a surfactant, which is worth knowing before you watch. The Redwoods at Whakarewarewa were planted in 1901 and the ground trails through them are free. The elevated Tree Walk is not included in this tour: anyone who wants it buys a ticket on the spot while the rest of the group takes the forest floor. The Blue Spring at Putāruru is the one people have not heard of. Around 70 percent of New Zealand's bottled water comes out of it, the water holds 11°C all year, and it moves at 42 cubic metres a minute. The Te Waihou Walkway runs alongside the river to reach it. Tirau breaks the drive: the giant corrugated iron sheep and dog, which house the i-SITE and a wool shop, plus fifteen minutes for coffee. The day starts early. Pick-up at the SkyCity Hotel in Auckland CBD from 5.45am and the vehicle leaves at 6.00 sharp. On the way back there are drop-offs at the airport and the airport hotels as well as the CBD. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Auckland
Pick-up at the SkyCity Hotel in Auckland CBD from 5.45am, with the vehicle leaving at 6.00 sharp. Being late means being left behind, so arrive early. Collecting everyone takes about fifteen minutes. Auckland to Tirau is roughly two hours and 175 km on State Highway 1. Tirau to Wai-O-Tapu takes another hour and a half.
Wai-O-Tapu
The mud pool at Wai-O-Tapu is among the most active geothermal features in New Zealand. Thick grey mud boils continuously as volcanic gas escapes through it, inside a crater left by an eruption. It is the one people stand at longest.
Lady Knox Geyser
The Lady Knox Geyser erupts at 10.15 every day, reaching 10 to 20 metres and running for about an hour. Park staff trigger it with a surfactant rather than waiting for nature. It was found in the early twentieth century and named after Lady Constance Knox, daughter of a former governor of New Zealand.
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
Wai-O-Tapu is the geothermal park near Rotorua where the colours come from the minerals: bubbling mud, steaming fumaroles, and hot springs including the Champagne Pool. Walking trails connect them, and the Lady Knox eruption happens on the same site each morning.
Redwoods, Whakarewarewa Forest
The Redwoods at Rotorua are Californian coast redwoods, some planted in 1901, with free walking trails running between them through native undergrowth. The elevated Tree Walk is not part of this tour. Anyone who wants it buys a ticket themselves and does it while the rest of the group walks the free trails.
Blue Spring
The Blue Spring at Putāruru, on the Te Waihou Walkway in the Waikato, is clear enough that around 70 percent of New Zealand's bottled water is drawn from it. The water sits at 11°C all year and comes out at 42 cubic metres a minute. The walkway runs through native bush alongside the Waihou River to reach it.
Dog and Sheep Shaped Corrugated Metal Buildings
Tirau is a small Waikato town on State Highway 1, known for corrugated iron sculpture and the buildings shaped like a giant sheep and a giant dog, which house the i-SITE visitor centre and a wool shop. There are cafés, small shops and local art around them. Arrival 8.15am, with fifteen minutes for a bathroom stop and coffee. Orders can be placed with one of the recommended cafés on the way to save time. Departure 8.30am. Tirau to the Wai-O-Tapu mud pool is about an hour and ten minutes, 80 km on State Highway 5.
Auckland
From Tirau back to Auckland CBD, with drop-offs at the airport transfer and the airport hotels along the way.
