Auckland: Rotorua Tour with Waiotapu, Te Puia and Maori Haka

Both halves of what Rotorua sells, in one day from Auckland: the geothermal field in the morning, the culture in the afternoon. Wai-O-Tapu opens it. The Champagne Pool with its orange and green rim, the Artist's Palette beside it, mud pools at the boil, fumaroles, sinter terraces. Boards along the tracks explain what the volcano underneath is doing. After lunch in Rotorua, Te Puia. The Te Rā guided experience runs ninety minutes through Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, past Pōhutu, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, and into the Kiwi Conservation Centre. At the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, carving and weaving are taught rather than displayed. The cultural performance happens inside Te Aronui a Rua, the carved meeting house. It runs through a pōhiri, the formal welcome, then waiata, mōteatea, poi and the haka. The drive is three and a half hours each way, which is what a day trip to Rotorua from Auckland costs in time. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Itinerary

  1. Auckland Central

The day starts in Auckland, with the guide opening proceedings on the way out. Auckland to Wai-O-Tapu is roughly three and a half hours.

  2. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Thousands of years of volcanic activity built this park. The Champagne Pool, edged orange and green, and the Artist's Palette, coloured by mineral deposits, are the best known parts of it. The tracks pass boiling mud, steaming fumaroles and sinter terraces, each with a different geological story. Signs through the park set out the processes at work below.

  3. Rotorua

Rotorua by road: Māori culture and geothermal activity in the same streets, distinctive buildings, and a short stop for lunch.

  4. Te Puia

Te Puia sits in a geothermal valley, and the visit is the Te Rā guided experience: ninety minutes through Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, past Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, and the mud pools, with a stop at the Kiwi Conservation Centre to see the bird. At the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, carving and weaving are kept in practice by people learning them. The cultural performance is held in Te Aronui a Rua: a pōhiri to open, then waiata, mōteatea, poi and the haka.

  5. Auckland

The road back to Auckland at the end of the day.
