Vesuvius with a Volcanologist, and Time to Stay at the Top After
The guide on this walk is a volcanologist, which changes what you hear on the way up. Vesuvius is known for one morning in 79 AD and for the town it buried, and that story takes about a minute to tell. The rest of the climb is about the mountain itself: what it is made of, how it behaves, what it has done since. The meeting point is the gate where the crater path begins, at Piazzale di Quota 1000 in Ercolano. There is only one path and it is not hard to find. A satnav will take you there whether you drive or come by public transport. The route ends at the highest point walkers are allowed to reach. From there the Sorrento coast, Capri and Pompeii are in view at the same time, and the end of the tour does not mean you have to go down: you can sit, get your breath back, and stay up there as long as you want. One thing to weigh before booking. All sales are final, and no cancellation produces a refund.

5.0 (150) 5.0 stars out of 5, 150 reviewsThe horses go to 500 metres and no further, because local law keeps them off the crater, and the pace stays slow the whole way. Not a ride for galloping.
