Horses on Vesuvius at 500 m, at a Walking Pace
Two things to settle before booking, because both come from the operator. The ride happens at 500 metres, inside the Vesuvius National Park, and it stops there: local law does not allow horses up as far as the crater. And the pace is slow the whole way. This is a ride for being on a horse and looking at things, not for galloping. What you get for that is the ground itself. Old lava paths, vineyards growing in soil about as fertile as volcanic soil gets, and the Bay of Sorrento opening below as the trail turns. The guide fills the ride with the history of the mountain and of the people who have lived under it. The meeting point is on Via Plinio in Pompei, four minutes on foot from Pompei Scavi station.
