Up Pico, 2351 m, with Poles Issued at the Mountain House
Pico is the highest point in Portugal at 2,351 metres, and climbing it is the thing most people remember from a trip to the Azores. No mountaineering experience is needed. Good physical condition is, because the climb is a real one and the ground is volcanic the whole way up. The guides are professional and go up with the group, which matters on this mountain, and they cover the volcanoes and the biodiversity of the Azores as the vegetation changes with the altitude. Everyone checks in at the Mountain House, the official building for entering the natural reserve. The briefing happens there, and each person is given hiking poles. There is a large car park and there are toilets.
