The Golden Circle by Range Rover, with Bread Baked in the Ground
A private Golden Circle with an English-speaking guide, in a 4x4 Range Rover, collected from your hotel, the port or an Airbnb and returned to the same place. Þingvellir first, where the cracks in the ground are the plates pulling apart, with clear lakes and volcanic terrain between them. At the Geysir field in Haukadalur is the oldest known geyser in the world. Lunch is at the Geysir Glima nearby. Gullfoss comes off Langjökull, the second-largest glacier in Iceland, and there are several viewpoints over it. The stop most people remember is the geothermal bakery at Laugarvatn. The bread is baked in the ground by the lake, using the heat that is already there, with local ingredients and traditional methods, and visitors watch it come out. Kerið is the last one: a crater lake 3,000 years old, blue water inside dark lava rock, with a path round the rim. Because the booking is private, extra stops can be added along the way, and there is time for a proper break.

Thingvellir National Park
Walking across Þingvellir National Park you can see the cracks where the surface has pulled apart. Clear lakes and volcanic ground on either side of them.
Geysir
The Geysir geothermal area, in the Haukadalur valley, has the oldest known geyser in the world, and it is the easiest place anywhere to watch a hot spring work. Lunch is at the Geysir Glima, nearby.
Gullfoss Falls
Gullfoss comes off Langjökull, the second-largest glacier in Iceland. There are several viewpoints, and each gives a different sense of the size of it.
Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths
The Laugarvatn geothermal bakery bakes its bread in the ground on the shore of the lake, using the heat that is already in it. Nothing else powers the oven, which makes the bread about as low-impact as bread gets. The method is the traditional one and the ingredients are local. The place is set up so that visitors watch the loaves come out.
Kerid Crater
Kerið is a volcanic crater lake about 3,000 years old: blue water at the bottom, dark lava rock around it, and a path round the rim to walk.
