Three and a half hours on an ATV, and the destination is in the name. The operator collects you and takes you to their headquarters, where there is free coffee and well equipped bathrooms. They kit you out and teach you how to handle the machine before anyone starts an engine. The route runs through lava fields with green and blue mountains standing around them, past the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant, which supplies electricity and hot water to the whole capital. Then up to the top of the Hengill range, with geothermal steam coming out of the ground on every side, and views the other tours do not reach. At the end the bikes get parked and the last five minutes are on foot, to the Volcanic Springs themselves. The water there is naturally hot, and some people take the suit off and get in. If you would rather drive to the start yourself, email the operator. The base camp is at Lambhagavegur 19, listed in Google Maps as Safari Quads, and you should be there 15 minutes before departure.
