The Dragon Glass Ice Cave Under Katla, by Super Jeep from Vík
The ice cave under Katla goes by another name, the Dragon Glass, and the ice inside it is not all one colour: black ice in bands next to blue. A Super Jeep does the climb from Vík up onto the glacier, over ground carpeted in moss the whole way. The cave is in Kötlujökull, an outlet glacier off Mýrdalsjökull, with Katla underneath. The glacier and the cave both take the volcano's name. Crampons and a helmet go on at the cave. The guide explains how the ice forms and how the cave came to be there. Vík is about two and a half hours from Reykjavík on good roads. Arriving after the departure time means the place cannot be held or refunded.

The view inside the Ice Cave is truly spectacular the…
Inside the cave the ice is banded: black ice in some places, blue in others. The cave sits in Kötlujökull, an outlet glacier running off Mýrdalsjökull, and Katla is underneath. Both the glacier and the cave carry the volcano's name. The Super Jeep leaves from the village of Vík and drives up to the cave. Crampons and a helmet go on at the entrance, and the guide covers how the glacier works and how the cave forms. Vík is around 2 hours 30 minutes from Reykjavík when the roads are good. Arriving after the departure time means the place cannot be held and is not refunded.
