Sunrise from Punthuk Setumbu, Merapi by Jeep and Prambanan's Trimurti
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
YogyakartaThe day opens on Setumbu Hill, in the dark, looking at Borobudur across the valley. As the mist lifts, the light comes round the volcanoes and the terraced fields below. Then there are about two free hours before the climb up the temple itself. Inside, a local temple guide takes you up the structure, past the 504 life-sized Buddha statues, each cut from a single stone, and the seated figures under the bell-shaped spires. Merapi is next, by 4WD jeep across the slope, with the guide on a volcano that has been here 10,000 years. Prambanan closes the day. Built between the 8th and 10th centuries, it holds both Hindu and Buddhist elements and is dedicated to the Trimurti: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, Shiva the destroyer. It is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and one of the largest in South East Asia. Entry fees, and hotel pick-up and drop-off in Yogyakarta, are included. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
