Sete Cidades by Land Rover on the Crater Rim Track

The road most visitors take to Sete Cidades is tarmac. This one is not. The tour uses 4x4 Land Rovers on the dirt track that runs around the rim, which means the crater sits below you the whole way rather than appearing at a single viewpoint. Sete Cidades is counted among the seven natural wonders of Portugal, and the reason is at the bottom of it: two lakes, one green and one blue, seen properly from the bridge that divides them. Three and a half hours, with several stops around the rim and one down inside the crater, at the church of São Nicolau, for coffee and the toilets. Pick-up is from most hotels in Ponta Delgada, so give the name of yours when you book. If you are staying outside the town, the meeting point is the Hotel Marina Atlântico, and cruise passengers are collected at the terminal.
