Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
Sao MiguelThe day covers two craters, the western one and the central one. The jeep goes up onto the rim of Sete Cidades, 650 metres above the sea, with the twin lakes directly below. The story told about their two colours has a princess and a shepherd crying them. Sete Cidades is counted among Portugal's seven natural wonders. The route also crosses Pico da Barrosa, 947 metres up, and stops at the belvedere above Lagoa do Fogo. Lunch and drinks at a local restaurant are included. Pick-up is from most hotels in Ponta Delgada.

Caldeira das Sete Cidades
A dirt track runs along the rim of the Sete Cidades caldera. It is unpaved and changes in width and surface as it goes, so it walks like a trail rather than a road. The view keeps moving as you follow it. On one side the crater floor spreads out below, often under mist, or divided into green pasture. On the other the ground drops away to the two lakes, the green Lagoa Verde and the blue Lagoa Azul, which look joined by a thin band of land or water depending on the season and where you stand.
Sete Cidades
Sete Cidades is a volcanic caldera on São Miguel. The two lakes inside it are different colours, Lagoa Verde green and Lagoa Azul blue, and the story told about how they got that way involves a shepherd, a love that ended, and the tears the two of them cried.
Muro Das Nove Janelas
The Muro das Nove Janelas, the Wall of Nine Windows, stands near the Sete Cidades crater. It is built from local stone and pierced by nine openings, the janelas, though they are arches or embrasures rather than windows in any usual sense.
Pico da Barrosa is a prominent volcanic peak in the western…
Pico da Barrosa rises to 947 m on São Miguel. Trails of different grades lead up it, past viewpoints that open onto the scenery in pieces before the top. From the summit the view runs across the Atlantic, the coastline and the interior of the island, and on clear days as far as Santa Maria. The slopes themselves are worth attention: the rock records the island's geology, and the ground carries a wide range of plants and wildlife.
Miradouro Da Lagoa Do Fogo
The belvedere sits on the road that circles Lagoa do Fogo, with nothing in the way of the view. The lake below is deep blue and close to circular, held inside its caldera. On still days the surface takes the sky and the surrounding cliffs whole. It is the stop where most photographs of the lake are taken, and there is time to take them.
