Rinjani Senaru Rim in the Shade: 8 Hours Up Through Rainforest, 5 Back
A crater rim trek for people who do not have a week on Lombok. The route from Senaru is the gentler of the two ways up, and the operator puts it within reach of people walking their first mountain of this size. Most of the climb goes through tropical rainforest under big trees, so you spend the bulk of the day on shaded path rather than in open sun. Eight hours to the campsite on the rim, lunch and breaks counted in. From up there, Lake Segara Anak sits in the crater below. The view is good enough that the rim gets called Rinjani's second summit. The day before the climb there is time for the Sendang Gila and Tiu Kelep waterfalls, which means arriving in Senaru at least an hour before sunset. The start of the walk itself is two minutes by car from the hotel. On the second morning, after breakfast and sunrise, the descent follows the same path down: five hours with lunch and stops, finishing around one in the afternoon depending on your pace.
