Rinjani Senaru Rim: Coffee Plantations, Mondokan Lokak, Pelawangan 1

Two days to the Senaru crater rim, with the route broken down by the posts along it rather than described in general terms. The walk starts at the Rinjani Trekking Centre in Senaru, at 601 metres, between 7:30 and 8:00. The first half hour goes through coffee plantations before the rainforest gate, which is a gentler introduction than most mountains give. Inside the forest there are monkeys, and local strawberries growing at the side of the path. Pos 2 comes at 1,500 metres, for a break. Pos 3, Mondokan Lokak, at 2,000 metres, is where lunch happens, and where the brown monkeys have learned that lunch happens. After that the trees stop and savanna takes over, and about an hour later comes Pelawangan 1, the campsite on the Senaru crater rim at 2,641 metres. Segara Anak lake is below, sunset and sunrise happen from the same spot, and there is nothing in the way of the stars. The guides are local, and the day covers the Sasak villages and the way of life around the mountain alongside the walking. The food is traditional Indonesian. Day two: breakfast with the sunrise, then four to five hours down, with lunch on the way. Back at the Trekking Centre between 12:30 and 13:00, and a private car takes you on to wherever you are going next. The office is in Senaru village, a few steps from the entrance to the waterfalls.
