Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel and Silfra Snorkelling, Self-Drive from 9:30
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
South IcelandTwo halves of the same rift, one underground and one underwater. Raufarhólshellir comes first. It is 45 minutes from Reykjavík and one of the longest and best known lava tunnels in the country. Inside, the walls carry the colours the cooling lava left behind and the shapes the flow froze into, which is as close as most people get to looking at the inside of an eruption. The tunnel tour starts at 9:30. The second half is Silfra, the fissure inside Þingvellir National Park, on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The water is clear, and the snorkelling route runs between two continental plates. A guide works both halves and covers the geology that connects them. This is the self-drive version: you make your own way to Raufarhólshellir for the lava tunnel, then on to Þingvellir for the snorkelling. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
