Raufarhólshellir in an Hour, Self-Drive Only
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
ReykjavikThe lava that made this tunnel came out in the Leitahraun eruption, roughly 5,200 years ago, and the walk follows the channel it ran down. The visit takes about an hour. Platforms and lighting have been built into the tunnel, which is what makes it manageable, and all the equipment you need is handed over at the entrance. Raufarhólshellir is one of the longest and best known lava tubes in Iceland, 30 to 40 minutes from Reykjavík, and it stays open the whole year. One thing to check before booking: there is no pick-up. This is the self-drive version, and you choose your departure time when you book.

Explore the magnificent lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir
Raufarhólshellir is one of the longest and best known lava tubes in Iceland. The walk goes along the channel where lava ran underground during the Leitahraun eruption over 5,000 years ago, which is about as close as anyone gets to seeing how an eruption works from the inside. The visit takes roughly an hour, on platforms, with lighting built in. The difficulty is rated easy, though the surfaces are uneven in places and there are stairs up and down. Helmets and headlamps are handed out, and groups go in with an English-speaking guide who explains the geological features as they come up.
