You drive the quad yourself, which is the difference between this and being driven. Some of the tracks on the route are trails used by the Azores Airlines Rallye, and they climb to the highest ground around the Sete Cidades volcano. The itinerary is part tarmac, part dirt. Pico da Cruz is the high point at 845 metres, with the Lagoa Rasa, the Lagoa de Santiago and the Sete Cidades lagoon below it. In clear weather the lakes and the ocean are in view at the same time. The Vista do Rei and the Miradouro das Cumeeiras look at the same crater from opposite sides, and which one you get depends on the weather and the state of the tracks. At Cerrado das Freiras the paths run close around the Blue Lagoon. Near Serra Devassa the route passes the Muro das Nove Janelas, an aqueduct listed as a heritage site. Coming back through the villages there is Poços, the bathing area, and the old whale factory, shut since 1970, of which only the chimney is left. The guides ride with the group, handle the safety side and explain each stop briefly.

  1. R. Nossa Sra. das Candeias 1D, Ponta Delgada

  2. Fenais da Luz

The tour starts and ends in this parish on the north coast of São Miguel. The first stretch is on tarmac, then along the seafront, and then onto the dirt roads round about.

  3. Muro Das Nove Janelas

Near Serra Devassa stands the Muro das Nove Janelas, an aqueduct listed as a heritage site.

  4. This is a mountain with an altitude of 845 meters

A mountain of 845 metres. The view compares with the one from the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, except taken from higher up, which is what the quads make possible. From the top: Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa de Santiago, Lagoa Verde, Lagoa Azul, and the whole crater of the dormant Sete Cidades volcano. In good weather it is the best stop of the day, with almost the whole island visible from up there.

  5. Miradouro Das Cumeeiras

This viewpoint takes in the Lagoa das Sete Cidades and everything around it, and part of the north coast of São Miguel with it.

  6. Vista do Rei Miradouro

At 540 metres, a panoramic view over the crater of Sete Cidades. Depending on the weather and the state of the dirt roads, the same crater may be seen instead from the Miradouro das Cumeeiras, on the far side, with the green and the blue lake below.

  7. Here you can expect to make some dirt paths that surround…

Dirt paths running round the Blue Lagoon at Sete Cidades, with the lakes in sight throughout.

  8. This is a parish located on the north coast of the island…

A parish on the north coast of São Miguel, one of the villages the route passes on the way back to the meeting point. It goes by Poços, the bathing area, and the site of the old whale factory, out of use since 1970, where only the chimney is still standing. A dirt track from here runs down to Fenais da Luz.

  9. Fenais da Luz

Back where the tour began, on the seafront dirt roads.

  10. R. Nossa Sra. das Candeias 1D, Ponta Delgada
