Private Car Tour from Naples: Herculaneum, Vesuvius Crater and Pompeii in One Day
Three sites in one day, in a private car with an English-speaking driver from Di Sarno Car Service. The order runs Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Pompeii, which puts the climb in the middle of the day rather than at the end of it. Herculaneum is the smaller of the two buried towns and the better preserved. It was a retreat for wealthy Romans, and what survives is mosaics, villas and street after street held under the volcanic mud that sealed them. Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the European mainland. The road goes up and the last stretch is walked, ending on the rim of the crater with the city and the bay laid out underneath. Pompeii is the opposite of Herculaneum in scale: a whole city stopped in 79 AD, with the Forum, the public buildings and the large houses still legible as streets. What a private booking changes here is the time. There is no group to keep together and no fixed slot to make, so a long stop at the Forum costs nothing except a shorter one somewhere else.

Archeological Park of Herculaneum
Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii and came out of the eruption in better condition. The volcanic mud of 79 AD sealed the town rather than crushing it, and when digging started in 1709 the first finds were marble statues and decorative work. What followed were mosaics, frescoes and buildings still standing well above street level. The site takes in the Villa of the Papyri, where the ancient scrolls were found, and the House of the Deer with its sculptures. A pyroclastic surge reached Herculaneum rather than the fall of ash that hit Pompeii, which is the technical reason so much of the fabric survived. Walking here means walking Roman streets at close to their original level, past bath complexes and market buildings. Di Sarno Car Service runs the visit.

Vesuvius National Park
Vesuvius is the only active volcano on mainland Europe and the shape that closes every view across the Bay of Naples. The eruption of 79 AD buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. Locals call it the Good Giant, which says something about how a city lives with a volcano at its back. The climb is on foot, along a trail with volcanic artworks set beside it. At the top the crater opens up, wide and bare, and the view runs over the Gulf of Naples, the city itself and the islands beyond. Standing on the rim, the scale of what happened in 79 AD is easier to picture than in any museum. Di Sarno Car Service handles the drive to the trailhead.

Archaeological Park of Pompeii
Pompeii is the largest open-air site of its kind and the reason most people come to this coast. The eruption of 79 AD stopped the town where it stood, and what is left reads as a working plan of a Roman city: the Temple of Apollo, the Casa del Fauno, and an amphitheatre among the best preserved anywhere. The detail is in the surfaces. Mosaics on the floors, frescoes on the walls, sculpture in the courtyards, all of it made for people who expected another ordinary year. Outside the archaeological park, the modern town still works coral. One of the oldest coral factories is here, cutting pieces on Greek and Roman patterns. Di Sarno Car Service runs the visit.
