Day Trip to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius from Naples

A full day out of Naples covering the two towns Vesuvius buried and the volcano that buried them. Di Sarno Car Service collects you in the city, either outside your hotel or at the cruise terminal, and the driver holds the meeting point for 15 minutes. Herculaneum comes first. It was a wealthy town, and the mud that covered it in 79 AD kept the villas, the mosaics and the street plan in a condition Pompeii cannot match. Vesuvius is next. The walk goes up to the rim of the crater, where the Bay of Naples, the city and the islands sit below you in a single view. Pompeii closes the day and is the largest of the three by a distance. Streets, houses and public buildings run on and on, and what you take from walking them is a sense of routine rather than catastrophe. There is guided commentary at each site and free time at each one, so you can stop where the interest is instead of keeping to a fixed pace.

  1. Archeological Park of Herculaneum

Herculaneum was buried by mud rather than ash, and that difference is why it looks the way it does. Digging began in 1709 and turned up marble statues and decorative work almost at once, then mosaics, frescoes and buildings that had never come down. The town was small and expensive. The Villa of the Papyri, with the ancient scrolls found inside it, and the House of the Deer with its sculptures both belong to that world. A pyroclastic surge sealed the place in one go, which is why the detail here is finer than at Pompeii. What you walk through are Roman streets, bath complexes and market spaces at the level they were used. Di Sarno Car Service arranges the visit.

  2. Vesuvius National Park

The only active volcano on mainland Europe sits over the Bay of Naples, and the city has lived with it long enough to give it a name: the Good Giant. Its eruption in 79 AD is the one that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. The trail to the top passes volcanic artworks made out of what the mountain produced. The crater at the summit is enormous, and past it the Gulf of Naples opens out, with the city on one side and the islands in the distance. On the rim, the eruption stops being a date and turns into a scale you can see. Di Sarno Car Service drives you to the start of the trail.

  3. Archaeological Park of Pompeii

Pompeii is the open-air museum every other one gets measured against. In 79 AD an ordinary Roman town stopped mid-routine, and the streets you walk now are the streets its residents used: the Temple of Apollo, the Casa del Fauno, and an amphitheatre in unusually good condition. What survives is the ordinary detail. Mosaics underfoot, frescoes on the walls, sculpture in the courtyards, all from a place that had been going for centuries. The modern town outside the gates has a trade of its own. One of the oldest coral factories still works there, on designs taken from Greek and Roman pieces. Di Sarno Car Service arranges the visit.
