Pico in a Day, Ending Inside a Lava Tube
A full day, private, for people who have one day on Pico and want the island rather than a corner of it. The morning is the highlands: the Lagoa do Caiado, and ground with dozens of volcanoes and lakes across it, with the volcanic history explained as you go. There is a stretch of laurel forest on the way, what is left of woodland that once covered a great deal more of the world than it does now. Lunch is a picnic at Prainha, with local food. The afternoon is wine and the whaling past: the coastal villages, what remains from the island's best years of winemaking, and a walk through the Lajido da Criação Velha, which is UNESCO World Heritage and shows what it costs to grow vines on this ground. At Madalena there is the option of a guided tasting, three volcanic wines with a local winemaker. It is included in the version of the tour booked with the tasting, and the minimum age for it is 18. The day ends inside a lava tube. Only your group takes part.
