Mount Pico Night Climb with Tripix Azores: Sunrise from Piquinho
Tripix Azores has run guided climbs on Pico since 2015, and the team has taken more than 10,000 people up the highest mountain in Portugal. Climbing at night asks for more than route knowledge. Volcanic ground in the dark changes what a group can do: the pace has to be managed, visibility is whatever the night allows, the weather can turn, and the guide keeps track of how each person is holding up for the length of the ascent. The guides here work on Pico all year, so the conditions they read are conditions they know from working in them. The official trail is the only one used. The operator applies that rule to itself, and on a mountain walked this heavily it matters. Every guide is a Certified Pico Mountain Guide and a member of AGMA, the Azores Mountain Guides Association. Groups are small and the gear is of a high standard. The whole climb is timed for one moment: standing on Piquinho as the day comes up over the Atlantic.
