Irazú, Both Oceans on a Clear Day, and Lankester's 800 Orchids
The road south along the Panamerican Highway climbs to the base of the mountain that the indigenous village on its flanks called Iztaru, the likely origin of the name Irazú. The way up crosses farmland where almost everything grows, with the hills and valleys opening below. Irazú is the highest active volcano in the country. From the summit, on a clear day, both the Atlantic and the Pacific are visible at once. The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles is a pilgrimage site: some of the faithful walk for days or weeks to reach it. Inside there are high vaulted ceilings and stained glass. The Orosi Valley comes next, with its colonial buildings, and the Ujarrás ruins standing in green hills. Lankester Botanical Garden closes the day. It is a research centre of the University of Costa Rica, and it protects more than 800 species of orchids and bromeliads, plus a great many other plants.
