Irazú at 3,432 m, Cartago and Orosi: Back in San Jose by 3pm
Irazú is an active stratovolcano with an irregular subconical shape. It stands 3,432 m above sea level and covers over 500 square kilometres, which makes it the largest volcano in Costa Rica. The day is timed tightly. Pick-up at your San Jose hotel is between 7 and 7:30, then twelve miles east on the Panamerican Highway into Cartago province. The park is reached at 9:30, and the walk to the main craters is short, with the Caribbean side and the Central Valley in view and a guide on the history, the activity, the vegetation and the wildlife. At about 11:30 the tour is in Cartago, for the city's main sights and the Los Angeles Basilica. At 12:15 it moves on to the Orosi coffee valley, with a viewpoint stop for photographs, and lunch at a local restaurant at 13:15. You are back at the hotel in San Jose around 3pm, which leaves the rest of the day free. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
