Ijen in 24 Hours from Bali: Afternoon Departure, a Room, and the 2,370 m Rim

One night is all this takes. The car leaves Bali at 1:00 PM, drives across to East Java, and by evening you are at dinner, which is local and comes in vegetarian and halal versions. Then a room, and a few hours of sleep before the walk. The climb goes up in the dark to the rim at 2,370 m, and then down into the crater itself, where the blue flames burn and the sulphur carriers are working through the night. At dawn the light reaches the lake below, the largest acid lake in the world. The guide knows the ground, and covers the geology, the history and the local traditions on the way.
