Ijen Blue Fire from Banyuwangi, Health Check and Gas Masks
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
BanyuwangiThe pick-up from your accommodation in Banyuwangi is between 11 pm and 12:30 am. Before the road to the mountain there is a short health check, required by local government regulations of everyone going up, so it is neither optional nor an invention of the operator's. The hike starts at Paltuding, at the foot of the mountain on the Ijen Plateau. That is where you meet the guide and are handed a gas mask and a headlamp. The climb goes up through forest and volcanic ground in the dark, with the highlands of East Java below you once there is any light at all. The blue fire is down inside the crater, and seeing it means descending with the guide. It comes from burning sulphur gas, and it only exists while it is dark. When the sun comes up the crater turns into something else entirely: a turquoise acid lake, steaming vents, cliffs stained by minerals. Back at Paltuding there are stalls selling hot drinks and snacks, which is where most people sit for a while before the drive back to Banyuwangi.

Paltuding is the starting point of the Ijen hike
Paltuding is the starting point of the Ijen hike, at the base of the mountain on the Ijen Plateau. This is where you meet your guide and are given the safety gear, gas mask and headlamp, before setting off. The air is cold and the place is quiet at that hour.
Mountain Ijen Kaldera Adventure
The walk up goes along cool mountain trails, through forest and volcanic ground. As you climb, the highlands of East Java and the peaks nearby come into view. From the top you look down into the Ijen crater.
Ijen Crater Indonesia
The crater holds a vast turquoise acid lake inside rough volcanic ground. As the sun comes up the colours in it change, and the steaming vents and mineral-stained cliffs become visible.
Blue Fire Ijen Crater
The blue fire of Ijen exists in only a few places on earth. It is visible in the dark before sunrise, and it comes from burning sulphur gases that glow blue along the surface of the crater. Seeing it close means going down into the crater with the guide.
After completing the hike
After the hike, Paltuding is where people stop. Small stalls sell hot drinks and local snacks, and there is cold mountain air and somewhere to sit while the walk wears off, before the drive back to Banyuwangi or onwards through East Java.
