Ijen Blue Fire from Bali in 24 Hours, No Overnight Stay
Blue fire exists in two places on earth: here, and the Dallol volcano in Ethiopia. That is why people cross from Bali to Java and spend a night not sleeping. This is a 24-hour tour with no overnight stay, which is what makes it the cheapest way to see it and also what makes it hard. Pick-up can be arranged from anywhere in Bali, not only near the airport. Say where you are staying when you book, because a longer drive means an earlier start. The crossing is by ferry from Gilimanuk to Banyuwangi. The clock changes when you land, so the times below are labelled by island. 7:00 pm (Bali), pick-up and transfer to Gilimanuk harbour. 00:00 (Bali), meet the guide and take the ferry to Banyuwangi, on Java. 00:30 (Java), drive to Paltuding, where the trek starts. 2:00 am (Java), trekking up to the Ijen crater. 4:00 am (Java), the blue fire. 5:30 am (Java), sunrise. 7:00 am (Java), back down to the parking area. 8:00 am (Java), the drive back towards the city, with a stop at Jagir waterfall if you want one. 9:00 am (Java), local breakfast, at your own cost. 10:30 am (Java), back at the ferry port. 12:30 pm (Bali), the drive back to wherever you are staying. One thing to decide before you go: seeing the blue fire close up means going down inside the crater, and that is dangerous. If you are unsure, the operator's own advice is to stay at the top and wait for the sunrise.

Pick-up can be arranged from anywhere in Bali, not only near the airport. Tell us where you are staying when you book, so the pick-up time can be checked and moved earlier if the distance calls for it. Duration: 24 hours, with no overnight stay.
Ijen Crater Indonesia
The trek takes one to two hours, depending on your fitness. At the top of the crater you are shown the blue fire, which happens in only two places in the world: Ijen, and the Dallol volcano in Ethiopia. Seeing it close means going down into the crater, which is fairly dangerous. If you have any doubt about it, the advice is to stay at the top and wait for the sunrise. At about 6 am the crater gives its best view, when the acid lake turns turquoise.
