Golden Circle and the Secret Lagoon: 30 Minutes Minimum at Every Stop
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
ReykjavikA Golden Circle that commits to how long you get: roughly 30 minutes at each of the main sights, at least. That is a small promise and an unusual one, and it is what separates a day of looking from a day of being moved along. Pick-up is mid-morning, from the city centre or the cruise port, in a climate-controlled minivan. Þingvellir sits directly between the North American and Eurasian plates, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the original site of what is now the longest-running parliament in the world, formed in 930 AD. The geothermal ground near Haukadalur has hot springs across it, but the geysers are what people come for. Geysir, the largest, gave the world the word. Strokkur is the active one, and it goes up to 30 metres every five to ten minutes. Gullfoss follows. The Secret Lagoon closes the day. It is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland, and the water comes in from the geothermal area next to it, which has a small geyser of its own. Free time there is exactly that: free time.

Golden Circle Route
If you only take one tour in Iceland, this is the one people take. Stop lengths vary, but each of the main sights gets roughly 30 minutes at a minimum.
Thingvellir National Park
A short walk through Thingvellir, a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sitting directly between the North American and Eurasian plates. The history matches the geology: this was the original site of what is now the longest-running parliament in the world, formed in 930 AD.
Strokkur
The geothermal ground near the Haukadalur valley is full of hot springs, but the geysers are what it is known for. Geysir, the largest, gave the word to every language. Strokkur is the active one, shooting water up to 30 metres every five to ten minutes.
Gullfoss Falls
Gullfoss, and the sheer weight of water going over it.
Secret Lagoon - Gamla Laugin
Time to slow down. The Secret Lagoon is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland, and the water trickles in from the geothermal area beside it, which has a small geyser of its own. The setting is quiet.
