Six hours in the afternoon, in a minibus with Wi-Fi on board, back in Reykjavík around 18:00. Þingvellir first: the Eurasian and North American plates are separating here, and the Alþingi, founded on this ground in 930, is the oldest parliament still in existence anywhere. At Geysir, Strokkur goes every 8 to 10 minutes, sending water between 25 and 40 metres up. Gullfoss drops 32 metres in two stages, and it is the waterfall more people visit than any other in the country. Kerið is the one worth understanding rather than just photographing. It formed over 6,500 years ago, and not the way most craters do: a cone-shaped volcano collapsed in on itself, and the hollow left behind filled with water over time. The caldera is 270 metres across with walls up to 55 metres high, and the lake at the bottom is blue-green against red volcanic rock. A loop path runs around the lake and takes about 20 minutes. In summer the red rock sits against green moss. In winter the slopes are under snow and the lake freezes. The group stays small, and the guide travels with it.

Itinerary

  1. Arctic Adventures

The day starts with an afternoon pick-up in Reykjavik, and the first stop out of the capital is Thingvellir National Park.

  2. Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir is rich in geology and in history at once. The Eurasian and North American plates are pulling apart here, and the Althingi, founded on this spot in 930, is the oldest parliament still in existence anywhere in the world. After it comes the Geysir hot spring area.

  3. Site de Geysir

Geysir is about spouting geysers, and Strokkur is the one doing the spouting: water goes 25 to 40 m into the air, every 8 to 10 minutes. Have the camera ready before it does.

  4. Gullfoss Falls

The last stop is Gullfoss, the golden falls, the most visited waterfall in Iceland. It drops 32 m in two stages. After that the drive back to Reykjavik begins. Expect to be in the city around 18:00.

  5. Kerid Crater

Kerið formed over 6,500 years ago, and not by an explosion: a cone-shaped volcano collapsed into itself, and the hollow it left filled with water over time. The lake at the bottom is blue-green, and the rock around it is red. The caldera is 886 feet, 270 metres, across, with walls up to 180 feet, 55 metres, high. From the rim the view runs out over the surrounding country and, on a clear day, to distant mountains. A loop path around the lake takes about 20 minutes. In summer the red rock stands against green moss. In winter the slopes are under snow and the lake is frozen.
