El Totumo Off-Peak with Private Transport and an English-Speaking Guide
The selling point here is the clock. Most operators run El Totumo at the hours everyone else runs it, which is why the stairs up to the crater tend to have a queue on them and why the bath gets cut short. Everything Cartagena books the quiet slots instead, and puts the odds of your group having the volcano to itself at nine departures out of ten. What that changes is the length of the bath. Nobody is waiting for your place, so the float lasts as long as you want it to. The mud is dense with minerals, credited with soothing skin and joints, and buoyant to the point that staying up takes no effort at all. Transport is private and the guide speaks English. At the volcano, attendants give massages in the mud, and at the end a local helps wash it off, which is the part that goes badly when it is hurried. This is not the cheapest way to reach the volcano. What the difference buys is time in the crater, and nobody else in it.

Volcan de Lodo El Totumo
A guided visit to Volcán del Totumo, timed deliberately for the hours when the crater is quiet rather than for the convenience of the schedule. Transport is private and the guide speaks English. The mud is warm and full of minerals, and dense enough that floating happens on its own, without any effort to stay up. The therapeutic claims attached to it are about the skin above all. Attendants at the volcano give massages in the mud, which is where most of the tension in a pair of shoulders tends to go. At the end, a friendly local helps wash the mud off. The whole design of the visit comes down to one decision: being at the volcano when the fewest other people are.
