El Totumo Before the Buses Arrive, with a Colombian Food Tasting
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
CartagenaThe buses reach El Totumo mid-morning, thirty or more people at a time, and from then on the crater is a queue. This tour leaves Cartagena before they do. Getting there first is the whole plan, and it usually means the volcano is close to empty when you climb in. Pick-up is from your hotel or your Airbnb, in a private vehicle, and the guide is bilingual and stays with your group all day rather than shepherding a coachload. Morning or afternoon departure, whichever suits. The mud is dense and full of minerals, softening for the skin and easy to float in. The attendants at the crater work with your group alone, and a massage is there if you want one. The rinse is in the lagoon nearby, where local women have always done the washing off. Then the food: a tasting of traditional Colombian cooking before the drive back. One practical note. Tipping the community that maintains the site is customary here, and the guide will help you handle it. Private round-trip transport, the guide, the entrance fee and the tasting are all in the price.

Volcan de Lodo El Totumo
The buses arrive mid-morning with thirty or more people who then queue. This pick-up is early, before they leave Cartagena, which is why the crater is usually close to empty when you get in: no line, no pushing, nobody hurrying you out. The private guide is bilingual and stays with your group the whole time, with nothing else to manage. The mud is dense and mineral-rich, known for softening skin and unknotting shoulders. The attendants work with your group alone, and a massage is optional. Afterwards the rinse is in the lagoon nearby, where local women traditionally wash the mud off, and then a tasting of traditional Colombian food before the drive back. Tipping the community that maintains the site is customary; your guide will coordinate it. Included: private round-trip transport, the dedicated guide, the entrance fee and the food tasting.
