El Totumo Mud Bath with an In-Mud Massage and a Rinse in the Lake
El Totumo is one of the smallest volcanoes on earth. The drive out from Cartagena takes about 45 minutes, and the guide uses them for the city's history and for what to expect once you get there. Fifty steps up, then down into the crater. The mud is warm and dense, dense enough to hold a body up on its own: floating is the default position, not something you work at. A massage inside the mud is included here rather than sold at the top, which is the main thing separating this trip from the others that go to the same cone. Washing off happens in the lake next door. Local women are on hand to help with it for $2 if you want the help. A typical Caribbean snack and a drink come after. The morning departure puts you back at your hotel around 11:00 am, the afternoon one around 5:00 pm. The full day version carries on after the volcano with a transfer to a beach club at La Boquilla, lunch included and the club facilities for the rest of the day. La Boquilla is a neighbourhood with music of its own, rooted in Africa, and a kitchen of its own, and both are easier to reach from a table facing the beach. Wear old clothes. The mud is messy, and that part is not negotiable.

The activity starts at the Pegasus pier, where the guides will be waiting to greet you.
Volcan de Lodo El Totumo
The drive to the mud volcano in Santa Catalina takes 45 minutes, spent on Cartagena's history and on what the visit involves. Fifty steps to the top, then the mud bath. Old clothes are the sensible choice: the mud is messy, and the claim attached to it is that it takes years off your face. Floating takes no effort at all. Massages and photos from the people who work there cost $2 each, and the money stays in the community. Afterwards, rinse off in the lake nearby; local women will help for $2 if you want. A typical Colombian snack is included. Hotel drop-off is around 11:00 am on the morning tour, around 5:00 pm on the afternoon one. With the full day, a club with facilities follows, lunch included and the beach in front.
Playas de la Boquilla
La Boquilla is a neighbourhood of longstanding local families, where the music has its roots in Africa and the cooking is worth asking about, all of it from a comfortable spot facing the beach. Only on the volcano and beaches tour.

- Valuables Security: Upon arrival at the volcano, please keep your valuables secure. We make the vehicle we travel in available as a safe space where all guests can leave their belongings. The vehicle will serve as your secure location.
- Tipping and Local Community: The native community of this village relies solely on the commercial activity of the volcano. It is common for local residents to offer assistance with items you carry and subsequently ask for a tip. Tipping should be voluntary and at your discretion. To simplify the process and avoid solicitations, we highly recommend ascending the volcano without any personal items—just go in the clothes you intend to enter the mud with.
- Massage and Exfoliation: Once inside the volcano, there are local individuals who offer massages. Please make it very clear if you do or do not want this massage and exfoliation service.
- Cleaning Service: When exiting the volcano, a group of local women will offer to clean the mud off your body in a natural lake. If you do not wish to use this service, you are also welcome to clean yourself on your own.
- Extra Costs: Please note that any assistance you receive, regardless of whether it is offered by the guide or not, will incur an extra cost.
