El Totumo Half Day with a Carimañola, an Empanada or an Arepa de Huevo
Ratings collected by Viator and Tripadvisor
CartagenaThis is the plain version of El Totumo, and the operator says so in writing: not a fancy trip, not a luxury one. What you get is the volcano, a bilingual guide who talks about it along the way, and the mud. The cone is one of the smallest volcanoes in the world, and you climb inside it. The mud in the crater is warm and dense, and the soak is the whole point. Local opinion holds that the minerals in it are good for the skin and take years off you; that claim comes with the place. Rinsing off is done by a local who works there, for around $2. It is optional and it is also the right call, because leftover mud is uncomfortable for the rest of the day. Massages and photos cost about the same, and each one is somebody's income. Everyone working at the volcano makes a living from it. Afterwards there is a snack, and you pick it: arepa de huevo, empanada or carimañola, with a soda. Anyone who has spent time on the Colombian coast will have an opinion about which one to take. Pick-up is at the Los Pegasos dock for anyone staying inside the Walled City or in Getsemaní.

Volcan de Lodo El Totumo
The tour to Volcán del Totumo is guided, and the timing is arranged so the crater is comfortable rather than rushed. The mud is warm and buoyant enough that the body floats without effort. The minerals in it are the reason the bath is described as therapeutic, and skin usually comes out feeling smoother. Massages in the mud are given by local people who make their living here. That service costs $2 and is optional. The rinse afterwards is also done by a local, also $2, also optional. Taking it is the sensible choice: leftover mud is uncomfortable for the rest of the day. One honest note from the operator: this is not a fancy or luxury tour.
